Antony injury: Man Utd star carried out of Chelsea clash in tears in major blow | Football | Sport

Manchester United took a 1-0 lead against Chelsea through Casemiro, with the Brazil international netting against the Blues for the second time this season.

However, moments later, the Red Devils suffered a substantial blow.

Antony was tackled by Chalobah and was distressed on the field, shouting and waving for the medics to come on before being carried off on a stretcher.

After a delay, the Samba star was eventually withdrawn from the action with Marcus Rashford taking his place.

United now face an anxious wait to see if Antony can be available for their FA Cup clash with Manchester City, which is due to take place on June 3.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag wants another Pogba and it makes sense

Michael Brown, commentating for BBC Sport, reacted to Antony’s injury by saying: “It’s a huge setback.

“He’s on a stretcher, the strap comes round the leg which shows you they want to keep control of a certain injury and that’s very worrying.

“It’s just a late tackle that comes across and he reacted very quickly to say he’d been caught.”

And former Red Devils star Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, weighed in with: “It’s the reaction of a player that’s going to spend some time out of the game.”

Antony has scored eight goals for United since moving from Ajax back in the summer.

And Erik ten Hag will be hoping the player returns as quickly as possible as he looks to finish his maiden season in the dugout on a high.

United are already without several big names for the clash with City next month.

Donny van de Beek won’t be involved, with the Netherlands international out of action since a 3-0 win over Bournemouth back in January.

United have been forced to cope without Lisandro Martinez ever since a 2-2 draw with Sevilla last month.

And Marcel Sabitzer has been sidelined until the end of the season, too, with the midfielder unsure if he’ll ever play for the club again.

Speaking before the game, meanwhile, Ten Hag opened up on what he was expecting from his players.

“Win the game. You can never go into a game for a point,” said the 53-year-old.

“Our approach is like always, to go and win. We have prepared them very well, now the players have to act.

“I’ve said to the players, ‘get the job done’. We know we have to give everything and 99 per cent is not enough.

“We need a clear plan and from there the highest intensity. We need high standards and then we have a good chance to win this game.”

He added: ”I think a club like Manchester United needs a good bench with top players.

“He [Marcus Rashford] was at first injured and now he is back so we are happy.

“We can do something from the bench but we have a strong team.”

United are in action against Fulham on Sunday in their final game of the season (4pm).

They beat the Cottagers 2-1 in the reverse fixture back in November, with Alejandro Garnacho netting the winner that day.
