Anyone on these 6 benefits to get £150 off energy bill – full list of those eligible | Personal Finance | Finance
Millions of Britons receive a welcome financial boost to help with energy bills. The Warm Home Discount (WHD) is a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill paid out by energy suppliers.
More than a quarter of a million families will get confirmation of their discount this week, with letters starting to arrive from today (Tuesday, October 28). It comes after the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made the decision last year to expand the WHD to a further 2.7 million families to help Britons with the soaring cost of energy. It means six million households now receive the help, “including 900,000 more families with children and a total of 1.8 million households in fuel poverty”, the Government said in a press release.
It covers households across England and Wales and those who qualify are set to receive it before January.
In most cases the £150 will be automatically deducted from bills with no action required, though some households will need to provide additional information to ensure they get it.
Letters will advise them to call a helpline. They will need to have an electricity bill or statement to confirm the name and account number of the billpayer.
The scheme is delivered by firms including British Gas, Octopus, E.on, Ovo, E.on, and Scottish Power, with Ofgem acting as the regulatory authority. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) works with these suppliers and determines who is eligible for the discount.
People in England and Wales will be eligible for the WHD this winter if they’re getting one of six means-tested benefits and are named on the electricity bill, either in their own name, that of their partner, or their legal representative.
Benefits that will see you qualify include:
- Housing Benefit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit)
- Universal Credit
Scotland has its own separate WHD scheme. Those living in the country, receiving Pension Credit Guarantee Credit and are named on your electricity bill (or your partner or legal representative is), will likely get the discount automatically.
The WHD is not available in Northern Ireland, though support is available in the form of the Affordable Warmth Scheme.
