Apple TV viewers have heaped praise on a show branded so “fantastic” people have been binge-watching it all within a week. There’s a vast range of TV programmes to choose from across the varied streaming platforms, but one show, based on a series of books, has got many telly fans talking.

Lots of people turn to social media looking for recommendations for their next binge-fest, and in a recent post on Reddit, one person simply asked which were worth their stellar reviews, writing: “What UK series actually lived up to the hype for you?” They went on: “There are so many UK shows that get recommended constantly, but only a few genuinely feel worth the hype once you actually watch them. Which UK series did you finally watch and think ‘yep… that was brilliant’?”

In the comments section, people were keen to share their views with many recommending the same show – Slow Horses. Fronted by veteran actor Sir Gary Oldman, it’s a British spy-thriller series based on the Slough House book series by author Mick Herron. It boasts a 97 per cent score on reviews aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

The premise follows MI5 service rejects who’ve been banished to Slough House for a range of mishaps. Though none of them are quite bad enough to get them fired, they’re shuffled off to Slough House, where they’re referred to as “slow horses” and are typically expected to quit out of frustration or boredom after only being assigned dull, menial tasks.

Department head Jackson Lamb, played by Sir Gary, conceals his sharp mind behind his unkempt appearance, rudeness, and  poor personal hygiene. Despite the dull nature of the days at Slough House, the slow horses inevitably find themselves wrapped up in potentially series national cases.

In the comments section beneath the post on Reddit, many people were keen to sing its praises. One person said: “Slow Horses. I didn’t fancy it when a relative recommended. It’s absolutely fantastic, I binged the whole lot in about a week”.

A second replied: “Agree. Gary Oldman’s character being so scruffy put me off and I refused to watch it for ages, gave it a go early December and had watched them all by Christmas”.  A third said: “Agree – best programme we’ve seen for ages.”

A fourth commented: “Great show  – halfway through season three and been absolutely gripping the entire way through. Crazy that Oldman gained so much weight just for the role”.

Someone else said: “Same. This show is just so good. When my sibling recommended it to me, it sounded like something I’d find incredibly dull. But one evening I was at a loose end so I started watching. Definitely one of my favourite shows right now. Great twists, great characters and love the humour.”

In a separate Reddit post, another fan shared a lengthy post expressing their admiration for the show, writing: “I’ve recently been watching Slow Horses, and it’s damn good.” They went on: “This one had been on my ‘to watch’ list ever since it first came out just on the fact that Gary Oldman was in it, but I hadn’t gotten to it until recently.”

They branded Sir Gary brilliant and said he “manages to make Lamb funny and interesting while also being as slovenly, crass, and rude as possible”.

In the comments section, even more people agreed and praised the show though a few think the later seasons have dipped somewhat in quality. Slow Horses is available to stream on Apple TV and through the Amazon Prime Video Apple TV channel for a subscription. Free trials are available.
