Arne Slot adds two players to Liverpool squad as injury crisis deepens | Football | Sport
Arne Slot has invited two additional players to train with Liverpool‘s first-team squad this week, in preparation for Sunday’s journey to Nottingham Forest. The Reds resume Premier League duties this weekend after securing their FA Cup fifth-round berth last week. Slot’s team is keen to bolster their prospects of clinching a Champions League place next season, with the Dutch manager aiming for his maiden victory over Forest at his fourth attempt.
However, his preparations have been hampered by a persistent injury crisis, leading him to draft in two more youth players from the academy to enhance his training resources. Josh Davidson and Terence Miles joined the first-team training on Wednesday. Both players provided much-needed defensive cover during the session, as Liverpool grapple with a shortage in that department due to injuries to Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo.
Davidson, 20, is a right-back who has been with the club since he was six years old, having signed his first professional contract in October 2022.
Miles, 21, also plays at right-back but can step in as a centre-back if required.
Neither player is expected to be on the bench against Forest this weekend, with both brought in solely to mimic match situations during training sessions.
The pair joined fellow academy prospects Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni, who have become regular members of Slot’s first-team squad, as well as Calvin Ramsay, who remains an option despite the Liverpool manager essentially ruling out any chance of him playing.
Davidson and Miles’ involvement comes after Slot confirmed that Frimpong will not be available for the Forest match this weekend.
The Dutch international has been out of action since suffering a thigh injury in the early stages of the Champions League clash with Qarabag.
He could potentially return against West Ham the following weekend, providing the Reds with another crucial right-back option.
Meanwhile, Slot has also indicated that Joe Gomez will be ready to start if required, having recently made his comeback from injury.
Alexander Isak could be back towards the end of March or beginning of April, provided there are no setbacks in his recovery.
Isak has recently been seen at the AXA Training Centre, kicking a ball for the first time since breaking his leg in a match against Tottenham last December.
The 26-year-old is expected to make some form of appearance before the season ends.
