Asda announces huge new change to how supermarkets look inside | UK | News

Asda is set to get a brand new look after a recent renovation of its Harrogate store. The new layout is to set the blueprint for other stores and features more modern in-store signage.

Instead of aisle-by-aisle signs, the store has installed electric signs over key areas, indicating to customers where the ‘Fruit and Veg’ or ‘Meat and Fish’ sections are located. One of the most notable differences is an entirely new department in the shop, as planned out by Asda’s Allan Leighton’s designs. There are now George Home and General Merchandise departments on the shop floor as the supermarket looks to boost sales of its non-food options. This includes newly designed fixtures and space to display the supermarket’s partnerships, such as their collaboration with TV star Stacey Solomon.

New cabinet fixtures have also been fitted into the new and improved fruit and veg section to improve availability on the shop floor. The beers, wines and spirits section has been expanded too, while the in-store bakery has been revamped along with the health and beauty department.

Harrogate reopened this week to shoppers. It is the first of seven Asda stores set to receive a combined £12million investment before December 1. The plans to rejuvenate the Yorkshire-based store were announced in August.

Newly renovated stores in Pudsey, Keighley and Kingswood are also set to reopen next week after a £7.2 million investment. Asda spent an additional £4.6 million on upgrading two stores in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, and in Stockton-on-Tees.

Liz Evans, chief commercial officer for retail and non-food at Asda, said: “We’re so excited to welcome customers into our newly upgraded Harrogate store – the first to get an upgrade as part of our £12m investment across Yorkshire and nearby areas.

“Asda started here 60 years ago, so putting money back into our home patch really means a lot to us. We want our stores to feel fresh, easy to shop, and full of great value for local families. This is just the start – we can’t wait to unveil more upgraded Yorkshire stores over the next few weeks.”

Asda rolled out nine new Express convenience stores last month as part of its mission to strengthen its presence in high-footfall urban areas, residential neighbourhoods, and transport hubs.

Open daily from 6am to 11pm, each Express convenience store offers over 3,000 branded and own-label products.
