Asda is making a major change in 212 of its UK stores for people over the age of 60 from Saturday, November 1.
The supermarket chain is bringing back its popular ‘Winter Warmer’ scheme across its cafes which allows eligible customers to get a meal deal for just £1. The scheme aims to support the over 60s over the cold winter months when household budgets are often under pressure thanks to expensive energy costs. The £1 Winter Warmer meal will be available in 212 Asda cafes for customers aged 60 and over from Saturday, November 1, until Saturday, February 28.
Eligible customers who visit any of Asda’s cafes between these dates will be able to enjoy a bowl of hot tomato or chicken soup, bread and unlimited tea or coffee for just £1. Customers can also opt to ugrade their meal with a small latte, cappuccino or speciality tea for an extra 55p, or a medium size drink for £1.10.
Asda’s Community Champions are also inviting and encouraging many local over 60’s groups and individuals to come along to their store café to use the £1 Winter Warmer meal as an opportunity to come and chat to others.
Last year, Asda’s Christmas community tracker laid bare the lack of human interaction and conversations millions of older people suffer in the run up and during the festive period, with one in 10 saying they aren’t sure they will speak to anyone between December 15 and January 1.
Meanwhile, one in 10 over 60’s said they’d gone to a supermarket simply to speak to another person.
Jordan Cummings, buying manager, cafes and concessions at Asda said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.
“Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back this November, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others.”
