Lionel Messi once delivered a perfect riposte to Didier Drogba after the Chelsea legend questioned his footballing legacy.

He had already secured the prize five times when Drogba, who presented the Ballon d’Or from 2019 to 2024, questioned his position within the game.

Speaking in 2018, the former striker said: “Messi is still not at the heights of [Diego] Maradona and Pele, but he’s not far away.”

Messi went on to clinch the award three more times in 2019, 2021 and 2023, cementing his legacy as the greatest player of all time.
