Benjamin Sesko could block Man Utd transfer as Ruben Amorim faces tough decision | Football | Sport
Manchester United are bracing themselves for a hectic January transfer window, but Benjamin Sesko‘s injury could throw a spanner in the works. The Red Devils have just over a month until they can dip into the market for fresh talent. Sesko was one of five new faces at Old Trafford in the summer, joining Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon.
Despite their summer spending spree, United continue to be linked with further reinforcements come the New Year. However, Sesko’s recent setback could force a rethink in their transfer strategy. The forward sustained a knee injury during United’s draw with Tottenham before the international break, with reports suggesting he could be out of action for up to a month.
This could see Ruben Amorim having to rely on other squad members to step up in Sesko’s absence over the coming weeks.
One such player is Joshua Zirkzee, who has been heavily linked with an exit since the summer.
Zirkzee has found playing time hard to come by at United this season and is yet to be given a starting berth by Amorim in any competition.
Indeed, the Netherlands international has made just four appearances in the Premier League this term, totalling a mere 82 minutes on the pitch.
Since arriving at United in the summer of 2024, Zirkzee has only managed to net seven goals for the Red Devils and rumours have been swirling about a potential exit from Old Trafford.
However, with Sesko currently sidelined due to injury, this could provide Zirkzee with an opportunity to clock up more game time over the coming weeks.
United will also need to plan ahead for the squad changes expected in December and January.
The Africa Cup of Nations is set to take place later this year, which will see Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui representing their respective countries.
This will leave United’s forward line somewhat depleted, potentially leading to more opportunities for Zirkzee.
Given these circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if United were to prevent Zirkzee from leaving, even if he expressed a desire to do so and a suitable offer was on the table.
It has even been suggested that United are prepared to block any potential exit for Zirkzee due to the lack of other senior forward options in light of Sesko’s injury.
