Benjamin Sesko sent apology after Man Utd criticism and ‘not good enough’ claim | Football | Sport

Former Premier League boss Tim Sherwood has offered an apology to Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko following his impressive recent performances. The striker scored the winning goal in United’s victory against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last weekend.

Sesko has now scored nine goals in all competitions this term, with four of those strikes coming across his past five Premier League outings, playing a key role during the six victories achieved in seven matches under interim head coach Michael Carrick.

United secured Sesko’s signature last summer from RB Leipzig in a £74million (€85million) transfer, with the striker being one of four new arrivals, alongside Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens who all moved to Old Trafford.

Following the 2-2 draw with Burnley in January, where Sesko found the net twice as United had to settle for a draw at Turf Moor, Sherwood delivered his original assessment of the Slovenia striker, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“I think the positive is Sesko scoring two goals,” Sherwood told Sky Sports on January 7. “Hopefully he gets some confidence from that. He’s took six months to turn up at Man United. I am pleased for the lad, he has had a tough run of it.

“I had him off the pitch at half time, never wear a Man United shirt again. I stand by what I say, he’s not good enough to play for Man United.

“He’s turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated. Fair play to him, hopefully he gets some confidence and we start seeing something different from him.”

Now, almost two months later, Sherwood has now issued an apology to Sesko as the former Tottenham Hotspur boss explains why he’s been impressed by the United striker, who has given Carrick what he wants with his improved run of form.

“I based my assessment on the Benjamin Sesko I saw playing under Ruben Amorim – a striker who didn’t want to stand up and take a penalty at Grimsby,” Sherwood said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“Even the staunchest Man United fans will admit that he wasn’t living up to expectations last year.

“I originally thought he’d turn out exactly like Wout Weghorst did and be another failed signing for the Red Devils, but I’ve been proven wrong and I owe him an apology!

“Michael Carrick has completed transformed Sesko and he’s now playing to his strengths. He’s puffed his chest out, scoring great goals and scaring defenders with his pace. He’s a different player to what he was a few months ago under Amorim.

“As a substitute, he’s coming off the bench with attitude and impacting games, which is a manager’s dream for a striker.”
