‘Best war movie in decade’ compared to classic now streaming | Films | Entertainment
A ‘gritty’ war film with a reportedly ‘ridiculous’ twist ending has just landed on Prime Video.
The Tank, which was only released on the platform a few days ago, has quickly become a favourite among subscribers.
At present, the German-produced film, also known as The Tiger, is the third most-watched title among UK-based users.
It ranks just behind the latest episodes of Fallout and Beast Games, both currently streaming their second seasons.
However, The Tank is outperforming all other film options, including Prime exclusive Trap House.
Set in World War II, the film offers an Axis perspective, similar to Netflix‘s All Quiet on the Western Front. According to the synopsis, the plot follows a five-man crew of a German Tiger tank dispatched on a covert mission deep behind the fiercely contested front line.
As they traverse no man’s land, they delve deeper into enemy territory and grapple with their own fears and inner demons. Fueled by the Wehrmacht’s methamphetamine, their mission increasingly morphs into a journey into the heart of darkness, reports the Mirror.
Viewers have already drawn comparisons between the plot and other films such as Fury, Saving Private Ryan and even Apocalypse Now. This is due to elements like its narrative as well as its depiction of warfare and historical events.
Another declared: “As a history nut this was the best War movie I’ve seen in over a decade. This movie is #3 for my favourite war movies/shows of all time. Just below Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan.”
Whilst another viewer commented: “Absolutely incredible! Well done on all fronts. The ending was a shocking twist, which in retrospect became clear! The psychology behind it was on point considering the horrors of war.”
The film’s conclusion appears to divide opinion amongst audiences, with some less than enamoured – one viewer branding it ‘ridiculous’.
While the film hasn’t garnered sufficient reviews since its 2 January release to secure a Rotten Tomatoes score, one Comic Book Resources critic described it as ‘gritty’.
Numerous viewers are championing the film online. One enthusiast wrote: “An engaging, well-acted mash-up of war movie, thriller, moral commentary. Great to see another WWII movie from the other guy’s perspective. If you can keep your expectations in check and avoid the spoilers, good chance you’ll enjoy the ride.”
However, others appreciated it, with one fan explaining: “The Tank had me hooked from the very beginning. The cinematography is outstanding – every shot feels intentional and adds to the tension.
“The atmosphere is thick, at times almost suffocating, yet the film manages to sustain that suspense without going over the top. I rarely find myself so invested, but the “mine” scene literally made me sweat, a moment that hit me on a visceral level.”
