BJK Cup star’s hotel room ‘floods’ as severe weather postpones play | Tennis | Sport

Taylor Townsend revealed that her hotel room “flooded” after severe weather postponed play at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

Spain and Poland were set to face off in the first knockout tie of the tournament on Wednesday but organisers were forced to delay their matches until Friday.

Townsend later shared a video of water pouring in from the balcony during a torrential downpour.

The start of BJK Cup Finals week was pushed back after a severe weather alert was issued in the Malaga region. Spain’s tie against Poland, which was due to take place at 5pm local time, had to be rescheduled to Friday.

Organisers said they made the decision “based on guidance from the relevant authorities to ensure the health and safety of all participants and attendees”.

Teams were also unable to practice on Tuesday. It meant that Townsend, who will represent team USA when they take on Slovakia, was left to entertain herself in her hotel room.

But it didn’t go as planned when water started streaming in from outside. The recent WTA Finals runner-up in doubles took to Instagram to share a video of the incident.

Torrential rain could be seen outside on the balcony as the water flowed in from underneath the door.

“Holy s*** so we’re here in Malaga for BJK [Cup] and it’s – the water is coming through the room,” the doubles world No. 5 exclaimed.

“The city centre is flooding but like, what the? My room is flooding.”

Towsend still found something to do with her Wednesday evening in Malaga. The American tennis star has 99.9k followers on Instagram and she shared her hopes of reaching the big 100k mark by the end of the day.

The 28-year-old will be in action on Thursday after BJK Cup bosses confirmed play would go ahead as planned following the initial delay.

The announcement was made following a “thorough site inspection by technical and security teams”.

Japan and Romania will face off at 12pm local time before team USA faces Slovakia not before 5pm local.
