Bolivia horror as over 30 killed in terrifying bus crash | World | News


A horrific bus crash has killed over 30 people in Boliviawith several others injured when the vehicle careered off a mountain road anf plunged more than 2,000ft into a ravine.

Another 14 people were injured, including four children, an official from a local hospital said.

“There are at least 30 deceased who have been counted already and are being transferred from the crash site to the morgue,” Colonel Victor Benavides told AFP.

Media outlet Unitel added several of the injured were in a serious condition.

Disaster struck when the bus careered off a mountain road, while travelling between the cities of Potosí and Oruro.

The vehicle plunged almost 800m (2625 ft) into a ravine in the southwestern district of Yocalla.

Investigators believe the bus could have been travelling too fast on the twisting road.

This is not the first time there has been a major accident on this stretch of road.

Last month, 19 people were killed when another bus came off a road, also near Potosí.

Bolivia has some of the most dangerous roads in the world and lethal accidents are frequent occurrences.

The North Yungas route has been dubbed the most dangerous in the world, earning the nickname “Death Road”.

Road accidents kill an average of 1,400 people every year in the country of about 12 million inhabitants, according to government data.
