British man tragically dies in Tenerife as Liverpool shirt put on tree | World | News
Police are investigating the death of a British youngster killed in a reported “deliberate” hit-and-run while cycling in Tenerife. The victim, a Liverpool fan identified so far only by his first name, Harry, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident on Monday evening. The alarm was raised at about 8am in the municipality of Arona, with the collision occurring on the TF-652 road between Las Chafiras and the fishing village of Las Galletas.
Local reports today described the incident as a targeted hit-and-run, and the island newspaper El Dia said the Civil Guard is investigating whether the man was “murdered.” The publication stated: “After initial inquiries, officers reached the early conclusion that he wasn’t run over by accident.” While local police handled the initial inquiries, the case has now been handed over to Civil Guard investigators. No arrests are believed to have taken place so far.
A makeshift shrine featuring flowers, candles, and a photo of the victim has been established near the spot where he died. A Liverpool shirt has been pinned to the trunk of a palm tree where bouquets and a message in English reading “I love you forever wee bro” were left. Although officials have not yet confirmed his status, the victim is thought to have lived in Tenerife.
A regional emergency response coordination centre stated: “We received the first calls just before 8:15 PM on December 1, saying a man had been knocked off his bike by a car at kilometre six of the TF-652 road.
“Two ambulances were mobilised along with local police and the Civil Guard. They could only certify the death of the person hit when they reached the scene because of the injuries he had sustained.”
While one local article described the victim as 25 years old, official confirmation of his age and full identity has not yet been made public.
