Brown University: Shooter opens fire at prestigious college | US | News


At least two people are dead and eight others are critically injured after a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, according to campus officials.

Police were called to the scene at about 5.30pm local time.

• Authorities are still searching for the shooter, according to the Providence mayor.

• Campus alerts had warned students of an active shooter and urged them to remain hidden until further notice, locking doors and silencing phones.

• Brown is a private Ivy League college university and one of the oldest higher education institutions in the US, with roughly 7,300 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Saturday, when the shootings took place, was the second day of final exams for the autumn semester. The reported shooting occurred near the university’s School of Engineering and Physics department.
