Manchester United treble winner Teddy Sheringham has urged Bruno Fernandes to remain at Old Trafford. The club captain has drawn interest from Saudi Arabia, alongside Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Despite ongoing speculation about his future, the 31-year-old has been a consistent performer for United and a vital presence under successive managers.
Michael Carrick is the latest boss to benefit from his services, having been appointed as interim head coach with the task of securing European football. Following their derby triumph over Manchester City, United are well-positioned heading into the second half of the season, sitting just one point behind Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification. Fernandes has contributed five goals and nine assists in the Premier League this term.
ESPN reported on Wednesday about Fernandes’ situation at United. The club are understood to be preparing talks over a contract extension ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Sheringham believes United should do everything possible to keep hold of the Portugal international. Yet he conceded that, should an attractive proposal emerge, it would be hard to turn down.
He told the Manchester Evening News via BetMGM: “Well, you’ve got to weigh up the situation. You’ve got to see how old he is.
“At the moment, he’s firing on all cylinders and still playing great football. I wouldn’t want to lose too many players from Manchester United who are playing at the top of their game, so he’d be one I’d like to keep.
“But again, if they get offered silly money from Saudi, then you’ve got to look at it because you can. You can revamp your team with a lot of money.
“He’s probably been the top performer over the last three years. It hasn’t been hard, let’s put it that way, because there are a lot of players underperforming.
“His stock is still very high, because he’s a top player, keeps scoring goals, and he’s leading by example on the football pitch. So I’d be looking to keep Fernandes.”

As talkSPORT previously revealed, Fernandes is amongst the 50 players being pursued by the Saudi Pro League as part of their forthcoming transfer campaign.
Saudi giants Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr all showed interest last summer and the clubs are understood to be considering renewed offers for Fernandes at this time.
The United skipper has already addressed this season’s speculation surrounding last summer’s rumours.
He recently revealed his disappointment after sensing that the club were prepared to sanction his move to Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.
He said: “From the club I felt it was, ‘If you go, it’s not so bad for us’. It hurts me a bit. More than hurting me, it makes me sad. I’m a player no one can criticise; I’m always available and give my best.
“I could have left in this transfer window; I would have earned much more money. I would have won many trophies this season, but I decided not to go, not only for family reasons but because I genuinely love the club.”
