Bryson DeChambeau interview turns sour as Masters star refuses question | Golf | Sport

Much attention has been focused on DeChambeau’s new five-iron, which made little impression during the American’s turbulent Thursday at Augusta. DeChambeau revealed he 3D-printed it ahead of the Masters, not the first time he has used 3D-printed clubs, and he became defensive when questioned about it after completing his round. The 32-year-old even cut off the final reporter who raised the subject.

“How is the 5-iron treating you,” one reporter asked.

“Good. It was great on seven,” he answered. “Hit a good second shot. Wind didn’t hit it off the left. Irons are still something I have to work on.”

DeChambeau was then asked how long it takes to make one. “Prints in eight hours,” he shared. “Machines, they’re three or four hours. Then you have to cut grooves in it and do a bunch of other stuff. So you can have something within a day and a half.

“Would that be something you would want to do for the weekend?” a reporter asked.

DeChambeau blew a raspberry in his initial response.

“No. It has to be USGA-conforming. There’s a whole process you have to go through.”

Bringing the session to a close, a reporter enquired: “Can you tell us a little bit more about the process of making the 5-iron? Where was it made? Just a little bit of-” before DeChambeau swiftly shut down the line of questioning.

“That’s a longer conversation. It’s not for here,” he said, visibly irritated. DeChambeau refused to take any further questions.

The 32-year-old has never broken into the top four at the Masters, finishing tied for fifth in each of the past two years, having missed the cut in both 2022 and 2023.

DeChambeau has chalked up five victories on LIV Golf since making the switch, most recently triumphing at LIV Golf South Africa last month.

He is a three-time member of the US Ryder Cup team, playing a key role in the Americans’ victory in 2021 while also featuring on the losing side in 2018 and 2025.
