Millions of broadband customers across the UK are being warned to expect higher bills in 2026, even if they are still in the middle of their contract. Most major providers have annual rises written into their terms, meaning prices can go up every March or April, regardless of when a customer signed up.

These increases come on top of rising business costs and the inflation-linked rises that have affected the industry for years. Many households will have already noticed their bills rising each spring, and the same is expected again this year.

A growing number of customers are now on fixed annual price rises instead of inflation-linked increases.  These fixed rises are shown in pounds and pence when people take out a new contract.

They were introduced after Ofcom banned inflation-linked increases in new deals last January.

Some customers will not see any rise at all if they are with a smaller provider offering a fixed-price contract until the end of the term. 

People on broadband social tariffs will also be protected, meaning those on benefits such as Universal Credit or PIP should not face mid-contract hikes.

Experts at Uswitch say most major providers will still raise prices this year, and many customers will face a fixed £3 or £4 rise each month depending on when their contract started.

Under newer Ofcom rules, anyone who joined a broadband provider after January 17, 2025 should now be on a fixed annual increase rather than an inflation-linked one. 

However, many providers introduced these new rules earlier, and customers who signed up in 2024 may also be affected.
