Cam Smith tears into his own golf game with LIV Golf star stuck in a rut | Golf | Sport
Cameron Smith has desperately struggled since he joined LIV Golf in 2022 and has been criticising his own performance ahead of the BMW Australian PGA Championship. Despite an impressive 2022 season where he clinched victories at the Players Championship and the Open Championship, Smith has had a disappointing year in 2025, missing every single cut at the majors for the first time in his career.
The Aussie golfer, fresh from a missed cut at the PIF Saudi International, remains a favourite at the BMW Australian PGA Championship hosted by the Royal Queensland Golf Club, despite his recent form. When asked about the prospect of winning a home trophy with his baby boy watching, Smith seemed indifferent. “Yeah that would be cool,” Smith told Australian Golf Digest.
“I haven’t really thought about that because I’ve been playing like rubbish but that would be awesome and maybe that’s a good thing to think about and get me excited for this week.Smith, once the World No. 2 and major winner, is now two years and three months removed from his last victory.
“I’m looking forward to [the Australian PGA and Open]. I feel like the game’s in a good enough spot to compete. Obviously, Royal Queensland is a course that I love and have played well at.
“I think just being at home brings that [playfulness] back a little bit as well, and obviously having success here at RQ probably helps. I’m trying to go out there and not worry about it so much.”
Smith is preparing to compete in the Australian Open at Royal Melbourne next month and shared his thoughts on the upcoming tournament. He added: “I’ve never really played with expectations, so I don’t think there’s anything that I really need to do.
“I think what I need to do is prepare well and then just forget about it to be honest. I’ve got good memories from last year.”
However, Smith has recently been criticised by PGA Tour stars Mark Allen and former World No. 16 Nick O’Hern on the Talk Birdie to Me Podcast, where they discussed his performance alongside fellow LIV star Brooks Koepka.
“I always feel like the guys that went to LIV… the majority of them… weren’t die hard professional golfers,” said Allen. “From the outside looking in, it just looks like LIV stuffed their game.”
O’Hern also commented on Smith’s recent struggles. He added: “No one drove it worse than him at the majors last year… he missed every cut in the majors last year. I’m sure it’s annoying the hell out of him too,” added O’Hern in the conversation.
