Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed ‘shots’ with Tottenham star as he spills beans on Ibiza trip | Tennis | Sport

Carlos Alcaraz claimed taking “shots” on his party trip to Ibiza with Spurs star Sergio Reguilon will help him retain his Wimbledon title.

But the French Open champion admitted this year’s island break was “more chill” than last time following criticism from his team in his Netflix documentary.

The Spanish superstar, 22, won his fifth Grand Slam title by beating Jannik Sinner in a five-set classic in Paris last Sunday.

Like in the last two years, Alcaraz then went to “disconnect from everything” in the Mediterranean with friends – including Reguillon – before he starts his grasscourt season at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club this week.

He will play the first match on Centre Court at Wimbledon on June 30 as the defending champion.

“This year Ibiza was more chill. It was fun, but honestly, I rested a lot, physically and mentally. But I had fun, a nice three days. It was more than enough.

“Once I went to bed so late. That’s the craziest thing. Obviously I did some shots as well, but nothing more than that. More chill and as a normal person does.

“Reguillon was the only famous friend that I went to Ibiza with. Then the rest were friends of mine, friends of him. So we were a really big group there. So it was kind of mixed groups: my group, his group, and I think it was great mix.”

Alcaraz, who first took the trip to Ibiza in 2023 before winning his first Wimbledon title, added: “It is a probably a ritual now. It’s kind of the middle of the season. It’s really, really intense, the clay season. So soon after Roland Garros is the best moment to go anywhere. My friends are going Ibiza every year.

“So I thought I’ll go to Ibiza as well. But it doesn’t matter the place you’re going, it’s time to turn off your mind a little bit, to repress physically, mentally and coming back to the grass season as good as I can. So for me, having that time after such a good clay season this year, but such an intense Roland Garros, it was great to have my days to disconnect from everything, have fun, but for me, it’s fully important, and then coming back with more energy.”

But his Netfix documentary My Way revealed his team were not happy with the trip last year. The Spaniard had said: “In Ibiza, I’m not gonna lie, everything is always all about partying and going out. I wanted to go there basically just to get wasted.”

The new French Open champion then lost in the second round at Queen’s Club to Jack Draper. And his fitness coach Alberto Lledo complained: “When he went to play Queens, his body was not actually prepared. He arrived exhausted after sleepless nights. How are you supposed to work with that?”

Asked if he had tried to be calmer this year, Alcaraz said: “Not really. This year it was like that: the group that were there. Did any of my team try to stop you going this year? They didn’t. They knew at the beginning that I was going to go, 100%.”

Pictures of the relaxed Alcaraz appeared last week on social media. “There are some places that a lot of people and a lot of phones, taking videos,” he said.

“But honestly, I don’t mind. I think everybody knew at the beginning that I was going to go to Ibiza, and I don’t care that the people were taking videos. The opposite. They want to do that, for me, it’s okay. When you go into a public place, it is a thing that you have to get ready for. For me, it’s not bad at all.”
