Carlos Alcaraz reacts as Spain enjoy epic double with Euro 2024 and Wimbledon titles | Football | Sport

“CHAMPIONS! CHAMPIONS! CHAMPIONS!” he wrote to his 785,000 followers. “How great you are @SEFutbol!!! What a Euro Cup spectacle.”

The upload came complete with three Spanish flag emojis, as well as a heart. And in a separate post, he said “We’ll have to celebrate, right?”

After blowing Djokovic away in straight sets, the Real Madrid man confirmed he would be watching the football later that evening. That was despite being reminded he was expected to attend the annual Wimbledon champions’ ball.

“Well, I have the dinner that all the winners have, after all,” he acknowledged. “I will watch it for sure at the phone the first half. The second half I will watch on the TV over there.

“I can’t miss it. So it’s going to be a really big moment for the Spanish people. I have to just stay there. As they were watching my final, I have to watch their final and support them.”

It wasn’t as straightforward for La Roja as it had been for Alcaraz earlier in the day. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal secured their fourth European crown, with Cole Palmer’s equaliser for England ultimately proving futile.

And it’s not the first time that Spanish fans have been able to celebrate a Euros win and a men’s singles title at Wimbledon in the same year. Back in 2008, a goal from Fernando Torres secured a 1-0 final win over Germany in Vienna.

That summer also saw a first SW19 crown for Rafael Nadal. Also a Real Madrid supporter, he overcame Roger Federer in five sets in what is considered an all-time classic final encounter.
