Celtic transfer news as O’Neill eyes several January signings after return | Football | Sport
Martin O’Neill has pledged that Celtic will go ‘all-out’ to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window. The legendary manager has made another dramatic comeback to the helm after Wilfried Nancy’s disastrous 33-day stint was brought to an end.
The Celts are trailing league leaders Hearts by six points and are on par with Rangers in second place, with 18 league matches still to play. O’Neill, who triumphed in seven of his eight games during his initial interim tenure, recognises that the Scottish champions are lacking in quality. He has assured fans that he will do everything within his power to ensure the club concludes the transfer window stronger and better prepared for the title race.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I think that we would have to supplement the squad in some capacity. We would have to do that if it’s at all possible. You only have this period of time.
“We all know that January transfer windows are difficult, difficult to get the players you probably want at the football club. But we do need to supplement it and we’re going all out to try and do that.”
O’Neill has signed a short-term contract until the end of the season, giving Dermot Desmond and the rest of the beleaguered board time to find a permanent replacement for unsuccessful boss Nancy.
However, O’Neill, 73, has quashed any speculation of him remaining in the role beyond this summer.
He stated: “I can’t see that for a start. I genuinely can’t. I don’t know whether I would have the energy and all that kind of stuff. I’ll just put everything into it over these next couple of months and the same applies to me. If I don’t win football matches, I’ll be straight under pressure.”
