Chelsea reject sold at eye-watering loss exposes big Todd Boehly mistake | Football | Sport

Christian Pulisic is not the only talented player let go by Chelsea since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital landed at Stamford Bridge. But he is one of the best examples of a star making sure the Blues board come to regret their decision.

Chelsea forked out a whopping £58million to sign Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in 2018. And he showed fans he was worth so much by hitting 11 goals across all competitions in his very first season.

However, the wide man never reached double figures again in the Londoners’ famous blue shirt and was sold to AC Milan for just £20m last year – forcing Boehly to swallow an eye-watering £38m loss.

Pulisic had one year remaining on his Chelsea contract and there was little talk of an extension at the time of his departure. Since being flogged to AC Milan, the 26-year-old has demonstrated exactly why his former club should have done more to try and keep him around.

He racked up 12 Serie A goals and registered eight assists during his debut season, and he has started his second campaign at the San Siro in scintillating form.

Yet another strike on Friday night – taking his goal contributions tally to six in six games so far this term, and 11 in his last 10 games – helped the Rossoneri to a handsome 3-0 win over Lecce and once again showed Chelsea that they let a top player go on the cheap.

Cole Palmer aside, not one Chelsea winger can match Pulisic’s numbers up to this point in 2024/25, even with Pedro Neto and Mykhaylo Mudryk costing several times more than the United States international.

Though Chelsea‘s willingness to sell Pulisic for a huge loss shows they were ready to shift him off their books, the winger himself claims that he did not need too much convincing to make the switch to Italy.

“With a year left on my contract, it felt like the right time to move for my career,” he explained after signing for Milan. “At the end of the day, this move felt like a no-brainer.

“I spoke with the directors, I was also on a call with the coach. You want to get a good feel and feel like you’re wanted. Everyone at the club made me feel like that, they gave me a really good feeling before even setting foot here. I spoke to all of the ex-Chelsea players, they told me the ins and outs of the club and honestly they all spoke really highly of it.

“They all made it sound like it was a great opportunity for me. I trusted them and they’ve helped so much with the transition as well.”
