Chelsea stage emergency meeting with Enzo Maresca on verge of being sacked | Football | Sport

Those in power at Chelsea have staged an emergency meeting to discuss the future of manager Enzo Maresca, with a decision imminent. The west Londoners have only claimed one victory in their last seven Premier League matches, leaving them 15 points adrift of leaders Arsenal at the halfway point. Their last match saw them draw 2-2 with Bournemouth, after which Maresca was absent from his post-match media duties.

Despite being named Premier League Manager of the Month for November, the Italian’s position became uncertain following Chelsea‘s victory over Everton on December 13th, when he criticised the club’s leadership. He stated that the 48 hours leading up to the game were “the worst since I joined the club, because many people didn’t support us.”

Maresca is rumoured to be among the favourites to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City if the Spaniard decides to leave the Etihad Stadium.

However, football.london reports that Chelsea’s executives have met to discuss Maresca’s future, indicating that results must improve if he wishes to remain at Stamford Bridge.

Since this meeting, there have been reports of a two-week communication breakdown between Maresca and the club’s hierarchy, suggesting that the Italian may be considering his position.

A decision regarding his future is imminent, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior tipped as a potential successor at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s latest match ended in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, and Maresca was notably absent from the post-match press conference, with Willy Caballero filling in.

He explained: “Enzo [Maresca] isn’t feeling well. He didn’t feel well the last two days but still made training and made the game today.

“I took his position just to clarify that he isn’t feeling well enough to do the rest of the stuff that the manager has to do, so I’m here instead.”

Maresca joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024, leaving his role at Leicester City to take over at Stamford Bridge.

He guided the Blues into the Premier League’s top five in his debut season before winning the Club World Cup over the summer.

Their form has been on the decline since then and it remains to be seen if Maresca will be made to pay the price by losing his job.
