Clean oven with 14p method that sees ‘dirt come off’ with no scrubbing

Cleaning the interior of your oven can feel overwhelming, especially when it’s smothered in baked-on grease and stubborn marks. Yet, one resourceful mum believes she’s discovered a time-efficient trick that reduces both hassle and expense.

The ingenious mum, posting under the handle @momamjm, claimed she could make her oven sparkle using nothing more than a bowl of boiling water and a dishwasher tablet. In a popular video, she’s shown dropping the tablet into an oven-safe glass bowl. She opted for a Fairy Platinum dishwasher tablet, which normally costs around £13.97 for a pack of 94 from Asda (working out at 14p per tablet).

She then added boiling water from the kettle over the tablet, allowing it to dissolve slightly before placing the bowl into the oven and closing the door.

Then she allowed the tablet to completely dissolve in the water with the oven turned on and heated to 100C.

Following roughly an hour in there, she managed to remove the dirt with very little scrubbing required.

The TikTok user revealed: “The steam containing active ingredients from the tablet will settle on the oven walls.

“They have degreasing, dissolving, and cleaning properties. They will perfectly cover all the burnt food residues.

“The heat of the oven will speed up the dissolving process. As a result, you won’t need to scrub them.

“After an hour, open the oven and wipe the walls with a wet sponge. The dirt will come off immediately. It will even collect heavily burnt residues like a magnet.”

Cleaning an oven doesn’t have to be a tedious chore. Here are some swift and effective tricks to help you clean your oven with minimal fuss:

  1. Steam Cleaning with Vinegar and Water: Fill an oven-safe dish or baking sheet with equal parts water and white vinegar. Place it in a preheated oven at 250°F (120°C) for about 30 minutes. The steam will help loosen the grime. Once cooled, wipe down the interior with a damp cloth or sponge.
  2. Lemon Steam Cleaner: Cut two lemons in half and squeeze the juice into an oven-safe dish with a bit of water. Place the dish in the oven and heat at 250°F (120°C) for 30 minutes. The lemon steam will help soften grime, making it easier to wipe away and leaving a fresh scent.
  3. Salt to the Rescue: For fresh spills, immediately sprinkle salt on the spill while the oven is still warm. Once the oven cools, wipe the area with a damp sponge or cloth. The salt absorbs the spill and makes it easier to clean.
  4. Spot Cleaning with Baking Soda Paste: Make a small batch of baking soda paste (mix baking soda with a bit of water). Apply it directly to greasy spots and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Wipe away with a damp cloth. This quick targeted application helps tackle stubborn spots without a full clean.
