Millions of households are poised to receive cold weather payments from the DWP to assist with heating costs following the harsh beginning to the year.

A total of 802 postcode areas across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are affected. Storm Goretti battered the nation with snow, strong winds and temperatures as low as -12C between December 30, 2025 and January 9, 2026.

The DWP cold weather payment scheme provides £25 for every seven-day period an area experiences sub-zero temperatures, with multiple payments possible for prolonged cold spells.

Pensions minister Torsten Bell said: “As temperatures plunge, cold weather payments will automatically get support directly to vulnerable households. “Combined with the biggest ever pension credit take-up campaign and our triple lock commitment – set to increase the state pension by up to £2,100 over this parliament – we’re ensuring pensioners get the support they need this winter.”

Who is eligible?

Qualifying households must be in receipt of at least one of the following: pension credit, income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-related employment and support allowance, universal credit, or support for mortgage interest. Those not claiming pension credit generally require a health condition, caring responsibilities, or young or disabled children. Payments are automatically initiated when the Met Office records seven consecutive days of temperatures at or below zero. However, this does not apply to residents in Scotland, as the Scottish Government offers a separate winter heating payment scheme.

So, how and when will the payments be made?

The funds are directly deposited into the same bank account where benefits are received, with the reference “DWP CWP”.

These should appear within 14 working days following the cold spell. If you believe you’re eligible but haven’t received a payment, it’s advised to get in touch with the DWP. The highest number of payments were activated by Rostherne in Cheshire, covering 241,000 households, and Morpeth in Northumberland, which covered 136,000 households.
