Interestingly, a third of Brits believe they could survive a horror slasher film, and even defeat the villain. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 34% think they’d be able to outrun a masked villain, with 75% confident their quick thinking and survival instincts would save them.

However, 42% confessed they would be the first to get picked off, while 14% said they would outsmart the villain using ‘logic and reason’, and 13% would simply run and never look back.

A further one in 20 believe they would make it until the very final scene, but then not necessarily escape with their lives.

Almost four in 10 think they would most likely meet their end after trusting the wrong person, while others would probably ignore the obvious warning signs or separate from the group.

Alicia Afza, a spokesperson for Nerds, which commissioned the research, commented: “It’s fascinating to see how many people believe they’d have what it takes to survive a horror movie. After all, horror films are as much about quick thinking as they are about courage and chaos.”

The study discovered that Freddie Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs and Michael Myers from Halloween are the most memorable villains of all time.

Freddy Krueger and Hannibal Lecter have been voted the most terrifying horror film villains of all time, with Pennywise the clown from It coming in third place.

The suspense and tension are what 40% of people enjoy about horror or slasher films, while 30% love the psychological twists.

Interestingly, 40% prefer to watch a scary movie whilst indulging in their favourite sweet treats.

If they found themselves in a horror film, nearly half would want a survival expert by their side, closely followed by a calm and logical thinker.

When it comes to the most horrifying settings for a horror film, 20% believe an abandoned asylum is the most terrifying, while 17% dread the thought of being stuck in a remote cabin in the woods.

Almost a quarter think the worst mistake a character can make in a horror film is not finishing off the villain.

Of those who participated in the study by OnePoll.com, 48% believe the most important rule to follow in a horror scenario is to never split up.

Alicia Afza for Nerds commented: “Just like in any good thriller, it’s all about staying sharp, thinking fast, and keeping your cool when things get sticky.

“However, while most of us think we’d beat the baddie, we’re all much happier watching the film with our favourite sweets.”
