David Beckham shows true colours to Lindsey Vonn after Winter Olympics crash | Other | Sport
Lindsey Vonn was left injured following a crash just 13 seconds into her opening downhill run at the Winter Olympics last week. The veteran skier has undergone three operations on her damaged leg at a local Italian medical facility, injuries entirely separate from the ACL rupture she sustained in the run-up to the Olympics in late January. She shared a heartfelt update from hospital on her Instagram on Friday, garnering over 500,000 likes and comments from thousands of supporters, including celebrities such as David Beckham.
“A little update from me,” Vonn captioned the post. “Thank you all so much for the love and support. One step at a time. And yup, that’s a bruise under my eye. Almost gone though!”. Beckham was among those to reply, writing: “Stay strong, everyone is with you.”
He wasn’t the only prominent figure in the comments section. Naomi Osaka, Kate Hudson and several others posted heart emojis, while the official Olympic account also replied.
“It’s been quite a hard few days in the hospital here,” Vonn said in the video. “I’m finally feeling more like myself, but I have a long, long way to go.
“Tomorrow, I’ll have another surgery, and hopefully that goes well, and then I can potentially leave and go back home, at which point I will need another surgery. Still don’t know exactly what that entails yet until I get some better imaging, but that’s kind of where I am right now.”
Vonn claimed the downhill skiing gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 2010, her third Games. She was absent from the 2014 tournament but competed again in 2018.

She hadn’t competed for more than five years before her return in November 2024. Vonn triumphed at last year’s World Championships to secure her place at the Winter Olympics, becoming the oldest super-G champion in the sport’s history.
“She’s a very strong individual,” her father remarked regarding Vonn’s injuries and present mental state.
“She knows physical pain and she understands the circumstances that she finds herself in, and she’s able to handle it better than I expected.
“She’s a very, very strong person snd so I think she’s handling it really well. She’s 41 years old, and this is the end of her career.”
