‘Disturbing’ horror movie on Film 4 tonight with ‘masterpiece’ performance | Films | Entertainment

A ‘masterpiece’ horror film with viewers describing it as ‘painful, disturbing, and enthralling’ broadcasts on Film 4 this evening.

Pearl serves as a prequel to the horror flick X, unfolding in 1918 and chronicling a young woman confined to a remote Texas farm. She finds herself imprisoned whilst tending to her sickly father and authoritarian mother, all the time yearning to break free for a glittering dance career.

This bottled-up frustration and longing eventually explodes into savage, psychopathic behaviour directed at her relatives and local residents as she spirals into insanity.

With Mia Goth taking the starring role, the production came to life through collaboration with director Ti West, remarkably developed through FaceTime conversations.

Upon its 2022 release, critics lauded the film, with particular acclaim for Goth’s dedicated and celebrated portrayal, cementing Pearl’s status as a contemporary horror legend.

The movie boasts an impressive 93 per cent approval rating on film review platform Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have showered the horror with praise, with one five-star assessment saying: “This was painful, disturbing, and enthralling. There is a back and forth between disgust and empathizing throughout this movie where at parts you may not help but to feel bad for Pearl. Moments are heavily uneasy and uncomfortable, and it’s done beautifully. Pearl’s monologue is downright devastating, as it feels like that pain reaches out and touches you. An outstanding prequel to X(2022) that did not miss.”, reports the Mirror.

Another viewer praised: “Mia Goth dominates the film, given pretty much the entire screen to fill and the runtime to stretch her legs – this is entirely her domain and as Pearl she gives a horror performance for the ages. This horror movie was unexpectedly amazing. The first movie on the trilogy x was good but wasn’t enough for me to rate it high or cherish it as a masterpiece. This movie on the other hand gives you an amazing adaptation of the killer from the first movie. The storyline kept you interested without too much given at one specific time.

“It helps you feel bad for the person that you shouldn’t and hate the people you should root for. By the time pearls tear filled smile fades away it is burned into your soul forever. This movie was amazing. Mia goth is exceptionally amazing she should have won Oscar’s. 10 out of 10,” a third viewer chimed in.

Many were quick to highlight the stellar performance by actress Goth, with one reviewer saying: “Mia Goth dominates the film, given pretty much the entire screen to fill and the runtime to stretch her legs – this is entirely her domain and as Pearl she gives a horror performance for the ages.”

Another viewer wrote: “I found it engaging and original with outstanding acting by Mia Goth as the emerging psychopathic character. An original ‘horror’ film. For a gal who appears so kind and sweet, she has a wicked and kinda creepy side. This is a totally horrorific film, and the sheer viciousness is staggering. It’s beyond all my hopes and wishes for the film, Mia Goth has won my horror heart over. Such a special kind of broken that made me feel through the madness of it all,” echoed another.

Pearl airs on Saturday 10 January at 11.05pm on Film 4.
