Djokovic leaves commentators aghast with actions at Shanghai Masters | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic left Sky Sports commentators flabbergasted due to the way he clinched a vital point at the Shanghai Masters against Zizou Bergs. After taking the first set 6-3, the second was a far closer state of affairs, as Djokovic fought tooth and nail to secure a 7-5 win to take the match.

And it was during the second in which Djokovic showed just how incredible he is on the world stage, presenting grit and determination on the back foot to keep the ball in play time and time again. Bergs struck a well placed serve to Djokovic’s right, before blasting the returned ball all the way across the court to his left. The Serbian scrambled to meet the ball, but could only loft it high in the air to ensure that it stayed in play.

This occurred four more times as Bergs picked his power shots at leisure, before Djokovic ducked down the next time of asking to propel the ball forward with a little more motion. The unexpected move paid dividends in the end, with Bergs then firing the ball out of play to give Djokovic the point.

And the Sky Sports commentary team were baffled by what they had just seen, in awe on hot microphones over the resilience and technique of a 38-year-old Djokovic. One said: “Oh no, no, no, no, no, no. Five, five overheads in a row or high balls that Zizou plays and he just cannot break down Djokovic. Who can?!”

His co-commentator, then added: “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a point like it. Bergs really struggling with the overheads and Djokovic, well he’s so experienced and just knew to keep putting the ball up there, high into the Shaghai night and ultimately Bergs, he just couldn’t keep it going any longer. Very hard to recover from losing that point.”

Baffled by what he had just seen, the original commentator then said: “Five, five times he kept putting up the high defensive ball. I mean that’s unheard of.”
