Dog trainer names ‘best’ breed which has ‘amazing guarding instincts’

Dogs are the most popular pet in the UK with an estimated population of 10.6 million, according to research by PDSA.

This isn’t surprising as dogs have historically been referred to as ‘man’s best friend’, recognising the close and loyal bond these animals develop with their owners. They’re also thought to be devoted companions, which is why so many adults in the UK choose to have pet dogs.

Canines offer comfort and friendship to lots of people, as well as protection in some cases. There is a wide range of dog breeds to suit different households as some dogs are more energetic than others so will be better with owners who have an active lifestyle and time to give their dog plenty of exercise.

It’s also important to research the temperament of different breeds, as well as their grooming needs and any health issues they are prone to helping prospective owners evaluate how much time and money they can spend taking care of their pet. Will Atherton is a clinical canine behaviourist who has a large following on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram where he gives advice and tips on dog training.

In a recent TikTok video Atherton recommended rottweilers for people who are looking for a dog breed that is “powerful” and has “amazing guarding instincts.” However, he warned that this breed can be very difficult for owners who aren’t prepared to lead them. It’s important to always do your own reserch before committing to a breed.

Speaking in the clip the dog expert said: “Now this is exactly why you should get yourself a rottweiler. If you are looking for a breed that is large, powerful, has amazing guarding instincts, has the imposing look of a mastiff breed yet you want a lot of the intelligence and trainability of a breed like a German shepherd then the rottweiler could be the perfect fit for you.”

PDSA, which is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, has shared that rottweilers live for more than ten years on average and require a minimum of two hours of exercise a day. It states on its website that this breed is “naturally protective and can fit in well with family life if well trained and kept occupied.”

It cautions that rottweilers are “incredibly strong so shouldn’t be left unsupervised with children.” Atherton further mentioned the pros and cons of having a pet rottweiler in the caption of his TikTok post: “Rotties are one of those dogs that for the right people can be elite world class dogs, yet can far more easily become a disaster for most people not prepared for such a strong, intense and intelligent dog that can run circles round you if you let them. But if you can lead them, then they really are up there with the best of the best breeds for me.”

The clip has attracted more than 100 comments, and several users shared their experience with this breed. One said: “If you are the boss they are super easy. They pay attention to you. They are relaxed. They have self-confidence. And they are not as submissive as a shepherd.”

Another added: “We’ve only ever had rottweilers, they make perfect family dogs and we couldn’t be without one. Don’t get me wrong they aren’t the easiest of breeds to own due to their size and intelligence, but once you have one in your life they are addictive.”

Remember to do your own research before picking a dog breed, as they may not be suitable for your individual, or family needs.
