Dominik Szoboszlai under fire for outburst to Liverpool fans vs Man City | Football | Sport
Liverpool were given an allocation of 8,000 supporters for the quarter-final, yet the overwhelming majority had left before the final whistle. City had already raced into a four-goal lead before the hour mark, largely courtesy of Erling Haaland’s hat-trick, and the Reds’ misery was compounded when Mohamed Salah saw a late penalty saved.
Szoboszlai and his team-mates trudged over to the handful of fans who had remained after the final whistle, and he appeared visibly displeased with the criticism being directed at the players. The Hungarian midfielder attempted to rally Liverpool’s resilient supporters, who were forced to endure yet another mortifying defeat in what has been a thoroughly dreadful season.
After repeatedly shrugging his shoulders, Szoboszlai stopped clapping and began gesturing with his arms. The 25-year-old appeared unable to elicit the response he sought and was ultimately ushered away by Federico Chiesa.
A video of Szoboszlai’s conduct has gone viral on social media, leaving supporters far from impressed. One fan raged: “Do these players have a clue the cost of going to all these games after working hard all week with the overwhelming majority of fans spending a large portion of their working class wages watching this? And these millionaire players have the cheek to ask for more support.”
A second chimed in: “F***ing such an arrogant player. How can he be prepared to kick the paying travelling supporters?” A third wrote on X: “Travelling fans pay your wages, clap and get down the tunnel, theatrics don’t work with the supporters.”
Following his outburst, Szoboszlai spoke to TNT Sports and took aim at his team-mates for failing to show sufficient ‘fighting spirit’. “The mentality wasn’t there enough,” the midfielder added.
“None of us were there to be honest as much as we could. It’s a hard time but we have to stick together. On Wednesday, there is another chance but we have to get in our head this is not the season we would like to end.”
Liverpool travel to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The Reds then host Fulham next Saturday.
