Donald Trump crashes Chelsea trophy lift and Cole Palmer’s face speaks a thousand words | Football | Sport
Chelsea’s resounding 3-0 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final was unexpectedly upstaged by a surprise appearance from Donald Trump. But instead of stepping off stage after handing over the trophy, Trump remained rooted next to Cole Palmer – much the the confusion of the Blues midfielder.
The president sent shockwaves through MetLife Stadium, turning the trophy ceremony into an impromptu political spectacle following some post-match tussles. With extra security in tow, Trump made a dramatic entrance at the FIFA event unannounced.
His unforeseen presence elicited boos from the spectators as he appeared on the jumbotron before joining FIFA president Gianni Infantino on stage. Amidst the medal presentation, Trump was overheard commending Infantino as an “excellent guy.”
As Chelsea‘s Reece James prepared to lift the Club World Cup trophy, Infantino discreetly tried to usher Trump aside; however, the ex-President lingered awkwardly among the victorious squad.
He stood next to Palmer, who bagged a brace in the 3-0 win over PSG. The Chelsea star’s face spoke a thousand words as he looked confused as to why Trump remained on the stage during the trophy lift.
“I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy so I was a bit confused, yeah,” Palmer said.
Trump remained, somewhat out of place, for celebratory photographs with the elated players until eventually, Infantino guided him to a less conspicuous spot.
Nonetheless, Chelsea‘s moment of glory was not overshadowed, with Palmer’s double and Pedro’s goal securing their dominant win. PSG’s chances were already hampered by Joao Neves’ sending off, reducing them to ten men.
This dazzling victory, witnessed by a record crowd of over 81,000, confirmed Chelsea as back-to-back Club World Cup winners since 2021 and also netted them a lucrative $40 million reward.
Palmer secured the Player of the Match honour, whilst Robert Sánchez claimed the Golden Glove prize.
The tournament’s restructured format has ignited discussions regarding organisational challenges for upcoming competitions, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching.
Trump also commanded attention throughout the proceedings, underscoring FIFA’s deepening connections with American political figures.
Infantino has lauded Trump’s administration for its backing and spearheaded the establishment of a fresh FIFA headquarters at Trump Tower.
This strategic decision demonstrates FIFA’s ambition to bolster its alliance with U.S. authorities and cement its foothold within America’s sporting arena.
“FIFA [is] a global organization [and] to be global, you have to be local,” Infantino declared during his Trump Tower appearance, flanked by Eric Trump.
“You have to be everywhere, so we have to be in New York – not just for the FIFA Club World Cup this year and the FIFA World Cup next year – we have to be in New York as well when it comes to where our offices are based.
“So today, we are opening an office of FIFA here in Trump Tower. Thank you, Eric [Trump], thank you to everyone. Thanks, of course, to President [Donald] Trump as well, who is a big fan of soccer, [together with] the whole family.”
