Former vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz has revealed the closest sign that Donald Trump is serious about running for a third term as US president. Trump has insinuated on several occasions that he might seek a third term, something prohibited under the US constitution which limits presidents to two terms.
His comments have widely been interpreted as being tongue in cheek although numerous Democrats have warned that Trump could be serious. The US President has even shown off merchandise with ‘Trump 2028’ emblazoned on it, heightening fears amongst opponents that he might try to challenge or amend the constitution. Speaking in May about the possibility of running for a third term, Trump said: “I’d like to run, I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
In March, he declined to rule out the prospect, telling NBC that there “are methods” to assume office again if he wanted to.
Speaking at the time, White House communications director Steven Cheung said in a statement: “Americans overwhelmingly approve and support President Trump and his America First policies.
“As the president said, it’s far too early to think about it and he is focused on undoing all the hurt Biden has caused and Making America Great Again.”
Trump has seesawed between hinting at the possibility of a third term and dismissing the idea that he might run.
Speaking in May, he said: “So many people want me to do it. It’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else.
“There are many people selling the 2028 hat, but this is not something I’m looking to do.”
But Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota who ran for office alongside Kamala Harris believes that whilst he might publicly dampen talk of a third term, his actions suggest that he is planning for the long-term.
Speaking as part of a panel, he said: “You think he’s kidding when he talks about wanting to run again?
“You think he built a ballroom so that JB Pritzker when he moves in can have that ballroom?
“So, no, he built it for himself.”
The Trump administration announced in July that a 90,000-square-foot ballroom will be constructed in the White House’s East Wing.
The 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution says that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”.
Any attempt to change that would require a two-thirds approval from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as approval from three-quarters of the country’s state-level governments, making it extremely unlikely that Trump would ever get the required support.
