DWP claimants could be eligible for major road benefit in 2026

Certain Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit claimants could be eligible for further support on the roads. Road users receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) could successfully apply for a Blue Badge.

These are special parking permits for people with mobility issues or hidden disabilities, allowing road users to park much closer to establishments in public car parks. Many car parks also offer free parking for Blue Badge holders, with fewer time restrictions than for ordinary road users.

This is usually for individuals who have difficulty getting around and can’t walk more than 50 metres. It’s not just those with physical disabilities who can now access a Blue Badge, as the criteria have been widened.

According to GOV.UK, individuals who have obtained 10 points specifically for descriptor E under the ‘planning and following journeys’ activity will also be eligible for the badge. According to officials, these individuals are usually unable to undertake any journey because it would cause them overwhelming psychological distress.

However, motorists will need to provide proof of benefits before an application for a Blue Badge is accepted. GOV.UK explains that motorists will need to know the scores from the PIP mobility assessment and the award end date. Road users will also be asked to provide extra details, including certain pages from the DWP letter.

Those applying through a DLA will also be asked to provide their certificate of entitlement. When applying for a Blue Badge online, motorists will be able to upload a photo or scan of their proof of benefit.

Copies of the documents may also need to be submitted to the local council so the Blue Badge application can be investigated. But, GOV.UK has previously warned road users that they should never give the badge to friends or family or use a copied badge.

It explained: “Doing so could lead to a £1,000 fine and confiscation of the badge. Making sure that the scheme is not abused will benefit genuine badge holders, such as yourself.”
