The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed there are five groups of people who will not receive winter fuel payments this year. According to the DWP, those born before September 22, 1959, are eligible for between £100 to £300 to help pay for their heating bills this winter.
Most people will receive the winter fuel payment automatically if they are entitled to it. Recipients should receive a letter either this month or in November detailing how much they will get. But some Britons won’t be eligible.
The first group of people who won’t receive the winter fuel payment are those who live outside England and Wales.
People in Scotland don’t receive the payment, but they may be eligible for the alternative Pension Age Winter Heating payment.
In Northern Ireland, people might be eligible for a winter fuel payment from the Northern Ireland Executive, with eligibility rules the same as those for England and Wales.
The second group of people ineligible for winter fuel payment are those who were in hospital receiving free treatment for the whole week of September 15-21 and the year before that, according to the DWP.
If you need permission to enter the UK and the leave you have been granted states you cannot claim public funds, then you fall into the third group not eligible for winter fuel payment.
In the fourth group are those who were in prison for the whole week of September 15-21.
Lastly, there is an exclusion which applies to some people who live in care homes. Generally, you can get winter fuel payment if you live in a care home.
But you will not be eligible if both of the following apply: Firstly, you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-linked Employment and Support Allowance.
And secondly, you lived in a care home for the whole time from June 23 or earlier.
It’s important to note that you may receive calls, emails or messages from crooks pretending to be from a Government service in relation to winter fuel payment, besides other scams.
You should not give out private information such as your bank details or passwords, reply to text messages, download attachments or click any links in emails if you are unsure they are genuine.
