EDF urges customers to get £1,000 off bill before December 1 | Personal Finance | Finance

Energy giant EDF is urging customers to get a whopping £1,000 off the bill for upgrading their home heating before December.

The firm says it is trying to help customers move away from using gas by offering £1,000 off a Daikin or Ideal heat pump to replace their boiler.

While a heat pump is still pricey, it will pay for itself over time, EDF stresses, saving the average home £164 a year off bills.

EDF says that January 11 is the date when most home owners need a boiler replaced, in the peak of the winter cold that can prove too much for an old appliance to keep up with.

With the £1,000 discount and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, it means a heat pump is just £4,144.

EDF said: “Heat pumps offer a cleaner alternative and can be over 300% more efficient than a standard gas boiler. Switching to an air source heat pump can help households save £164 on energy bills per year with EDF’s Heat Pump Tracker Tariff, and cut carbon emissions by 13%.”

Finance options are available to help customers spread the cost. With EDF’s Recommendation Scheme, heat pump customers can also earn £250 cashback for themselves, and a £250 discount for their friend, with every referral.

The energy supplier says that it is so confident customers will be happy with their heat pump that it’s offering a money back guarantee on any installation.

Philippe Commaret, Managing Director of Customers at EDF, said: “Moving away from gas and installing low carbon technologies like heat pumps is a significant step which can feel daunting, and cost is often the biggest concern.

“That’s why we’ve launched a significant discount alongside a host of other support measures to make the transition to low carbon living simpler and more affordable.”

But the £1,000 discount is only available until November 30 or for the first 150 customers, whichever comes first.

The government has said more people will get money off technology that keeps their homes warm in winter and cool in summer, thanks to the expansion of the successful Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

This currently offers grants of £7,500 off the cost of installing an air source or ground source heat pump, which can keep homes warm during the winter.

Now the scheme has been expanded to offer a £2,500 discount off the cost of installing an air-to-air heat pump, which can offer the best of both worlds, providing heat in winter and keeping you cool in summer.

This is the first time air-conditioning units have been eligible for government funding, meaning residents will benefit from cool homes during a long, hot summer, without burning harmful fossil fuels.

This comes as 2025 is a record-breaking year for heat pumps, with September being the best month for applications on record.
