Emma Raducanu ‘to lose over £200,000’ after latest setback announced | Tennis | Sport
Emma Raducanu is set to miss out on huge appearance fees after withdrawing from two lucrative exhibition events in America next month. The British No. 1 was set to face Amanda Anisimova in Newark and Miami from December 7 to 8, with Carlos Alcaraz also competing in both events.
Raducanu has now been replaced by Jessica Pegula, who will also team up with six-time Major winner Alcaraz for a mixed doubles tiebreak at the home of the Miami Marlins. The world No. 29 is dealing with light bone bruising in her right foot, forcing her out of the unofficial matches.
The 2021 US Open champion is now set to miss out on £100,000s in appearance fees for skipping the two events, according to The Sun. Last year, Alcaraz reportedly banked more than £760k ($1m) a match when he contested exhibitions in New York and Charlotte.
Wimbledon runner-up Anisimova will now face countrywoman Pegula at ‘A Racquet at The Rock’ in New Jersey, before Alcaraz takes on Tiafoe.
The American stars will face off again at the Miami Invitational, while Alcaraz will meet a new opponent in Joao Fonseca, before playing a first-to-10-point mixed doubles tiebreak. All of the players will receive hefty appearance fees for taking to the court during the short off-season.
Raducanu had already ended her season early, pulling out of her last two official tournaments of the year for health reasons. The Brit had been carrying an illness during most of the Asian swing. She retired from the Wuhan Open and had her vitals checked during a three-set loss in Ningbo.
The world No. 29 is now planning a pre-season training block with Spanish coach, Francis Roig, who previously worked with Rafael Nadal. Roig joined Raducanu’s team during the off-season and agreed to continue their partnership into 2026.
Raducanu has also hired a new physiotherapist, Emma Stewart, who previously worked with the men’s teams in British rowing.
The 23-year-old is next expected to compete at the United Cup, a mixed-gender team tournament held across Perth and Sydney at the beginning of January. Raducanu and Jack Draper head up the British team. They have been drawn in the same group as Greece and Japan.
