England squad announced as Thomas Tuchel gets brutal by axing three players | Football | Sport

Thomas Tuchel has named his England squad for the upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia, with a number of big names failing to make the cut. Jude Bellingham was widely expected to return to the group after missing the last round of fixtures due to injury. However, the Real Madrid midfielder is one of three high-profile players to have been omitted in a surprise twist.

Phil Foden was also left out of the squad in addition to Jack Grealish, who will be frustrated given his impressive form at Everton. The on-loan Manchester City winger has made a flying start to life on Merseyside, providing four assists in his first six Premier League games. In spite of those numbers, he has not managed to earn a place in the England squad.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has kept his place after being called up last month as a replacement for Adam Wharton, who is fit again but has not been picked on this occasion.

Opening up on his squad selection, Tuchel said: “It was only three weeks since the last camp and the last performance. The question was why not bring the same group in, because they set the standards.

“Now it is about creating habits. We have unfortunately two injuries at the moment with Tino [Livramento] and Noni [Madueke] and of course we bring Bukayo Saka in to replace Noni. Jarell Quansah was a late call-up last time and he will stay in camp.”

Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford are the goalkeepers, with Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Reece James and Ezri Konsa among the defenders.

Myles Lewis-Skelly and John Stones have also been picked, while Djed Spence keeps his spot after becoming the first Muslim to play for England last month.

In midfield, the likes of Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White, Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice and Morgan Rogers have joined Loftus-Cheek in the squad.

Saka returns among the attackers to replace the injured Madueke, with Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Ollie Watkins also included.
