England told to boycott World Cup as Piers Morgan risks Donald Trump backlash | Football | Sport

Piers Morgan has urged The FA to reconsider England’s World Cup participation following Donald Trump’s tariff threats. The US President recently declared that a range of European nations – including the UK – would face tariffs on goods imported into America.

This comes in the midst of Trump’s attempts to acquire Greenland, currently under Danish ownership. On his personal social media platform, Trump alleged that Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Denmark and the UK have all visited Greenland for ‘purposes unknown’ in the past and would therefore be subject to tariffs.

World leaders, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, have already voiced their opposition to this plan. With the USA set to co-host this summer’s World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, Morgan has proposed that any country affected by tariffs should consider suspending their tournament participation for the time being – a suggestion that could strain his friendship with Trump, reports The Mirror.

Morgan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Maybe England, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Norway and Italy should all pause participation in the World Cup while the various tariff negotiations continue with President Trump? 8 of the 10 favoured teams to win withdrawing might concentrate some minds.”

Currently, there’s no indication that England are reconsidering their participation in the World Cup. The Three Lions kick off their campaign against Croatia on June 17, followed by group matches against Ghana and Panama.

Providing a glimpse into his selection process, manager Thomas Tuchel recently stated: “When I speak to players who have been in World Cups, it has always made the difference when the connection was right, when the communication was right, between the players first of all.

“So, when the players had the feeling that the right group is in camp, that they knew their role, why they are in camp, what is expected of them, and they had the feeling that the tournament could even go on for another four weeks and they would be happy to be together, then they were successful.

Tuchel added: “When they had the feeling after the round of 16 already, ‘Oh, when can we finally go home?’ and the energy was not right and they didn’t make it. This just tells me that we have to get the selection right.

“It will be very important that we don’t select just for talent, but also for what we need from a player. What are the social skills of a player? Is he a good team-mate? Can he support if his role is maybe the supporting role? So, this is where the focus is.”
