Erik ten Hag lands new job as Man Utd close in on Ruben Amorim successor | Football | Sport
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has landed a new job with Eredivisie outfit FC Twente, more than a year after his departure from Old Trafford. Ten Hag received his marching orders from United at the close of 2024, with Ruben Amorim stepping into his shoes. The Dutch tactician occupied the Old Trafford hot seat from 2022, guiding the Red Devils to a pair of domestic trophies during his spell in charge.
His United tenure came to an abrupt end following a dismal beginning to the 2024/25 campaign. Earlier this season, Bayer Leverkusen handed him the reins before showing him the door after merely two league fixtures. Leverkusen suffered a home defeat to Hoffenheim before throwing away a commanding 3-1 advantage against 10-man Werder Bremen in a 3-3 stalemate.
With United currently hunting for Amorim’s successor, former Ajax head coach Ten Hag has made his comeback to the beautiful game. FC Twente have officially announced his arrival as technical director, with the Dutchman scheduled to commence duties at the beginning of February.
The club’s official announcement declared: “Erik ten Hag will join FC Twente on February 1st. He signs a contract until mid-2028. Starting in the 2026/2027 season, Ten Hag will succeed current technical director Jan Streuer, who recently announced his retirement after this season. Ten Hag will already be working in FC Twente’s football organisation towards the new season.
“Ten Hag returns to the club where he began his professional career. He enjoyed great success as a player at FC Twente and held his first coaching positions there.”
Regarding his fresh role, Ten Hag remarked: “I think it’s wonderful and special to return to FC Twente, where I’ve been a supporter at Het Diekman since I was a young boy. My football and coaching careers began here.
“With my experience in youth development, team building, and elite sports culture, I want to strengthen FC Twente’s technical foundation together with the Supervisory Board, management, and staff, so the club can sustainably realize its potential as a regional flagship.”
Ten Hag’s appointment arrives during the same week that United find themselves hunting for a new manager. Amorim received his marching orders on Monday, with the club now in discussions with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about a potential comeback until the campaign concludes.
Darren Fletcher is set to take charge of United’s Premier League encounter with Burnley on Wednesday. Conversations have also taken place with Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy concerning their possible return for the remainder of the season.
