Essential gardening jobs to do in October to make sure garden blooms | UK | News
A gardening expert has shared the ‘essential’ jobs you need to do in October to make sure your garden blooms.
Michael Griffiths, who is known on social media as @themichaelgriffiths, has shared the four flowers you should plant in pots and borders ready for next year.
In his video, he said: “You don’t want to plant tulips yet, but hyacinth, crocus, daffodils, and alliums will look fantastic in your borders or pots. You just need to plant them 3x the depth of the bulb.”
Not only this, but he also says it’s the best time to aerate, scarify, and reseed your lawn ready for spring, as well as collect seeds from hardy perennials for next year.
The gardening guru added: “Get your herbs ready for winter by cutting them back now. Raise pots up onto feet to prevent them from waterlogging over winter.
“It’s the time of year to start ordering bare-root fruit trees and bushes for planting from late autumn to early spring.
“You can start watering houseplants less frequently, give them a clean, and you might want to move them away from cold windowsills.
“Clean out the greenhouse to get rid of debris and let in the weaker autumn daylight. Install a water butt to make good use of autumn rain.
“Finally, move potted citrus plants inside over winter, keeping them cool but frost-free.”
Commenting on his post, one user said: “Oops, tulips went in over the weekend.”
Another user added: “I bought a bag of daffodil bulbs that say to plant between Sept to Dec, so I planted them a few days ago.”
While a third person said: “This is exactly the kind of things I need to hear! Clean and concise information that’s highly relevant and useful.”
Another chimed in: “I don’t plant my daffodils until Christmas. Our winters seem to be so mild now they peak too early.”
A final user said: “Caterpillars have destroyed the leaves on my new climbing roses. Should I cut them down for the winter or leave till spring?”
