Europe win Ryder Cup after holding off USA comeback | Golf | Sport
Europe have WON the Ryder Cup in the most nerve-wrecking fashion imaginable, beating the USA at Bethpage Black with nothing to spare.
Luke Donald’s side headed into the third and final day with a seemingly uncatchable six-point lead, but a surge of red engulfed the scoreboard as the tournament reached its closing holes, completely flipping the momentum of the contest.
Cameron Young, Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau all won on the 18th as Keegan Bradley’s side started to dream of the impossible. JJ Spaun’s victory over Sepp Straka reduced Europe’s lead to just three points, setting up a grandstand finish.
But amid huge pressure on the 18th green, Shane Lowry nailed the putt that earned the magic 14 points to retain the cup with three matches still out on the course.
It was then left to Tyyrell Hatton to secure the half point against Collin Morikawa that completed a first Ryder Cup away win for either side since the ‘Mircale of Medinah’ in 2012.
