Expert says mattress needs cleaning way more than you think

Changing your sheets frequently is a given – but did you know that you need to clean your mattress almost as often?

According to experts, your mattress should be cleaned as often as every month to six weeks – but some people have refuted that claim. But how do you even clean a mattress?

@nbcselect took to TikTok to write: “You should be cleaning your mattress every 4-6 weeks according to experts we spoke to — but don’t worry, we won’t tell if you haven’t been.”

“The first thing you’re going to do is take off all your bedding”, according to the experts.

You need to put everything in the laundry, and then grab your vacuum to pick up “crumbs, pet hair, or anything else from the mattress”.

Next, baking soda needs to be spread over the whole mattress. It then needs to be “gently” rubbed in with a “sponge or a cloth”, before leaving it for half an hour. This will help to get rid of “any odours”.

Then, you need to vacuum up the baking soda from the mattress. They advise: “Then, spray a carpet and upholstery stain remover over the surface of the mattress”.

Apparently, the cleaner needs to sit for five minutes before being scrubbed. Then, to ensure that the clean is “thorough”, use a steam cleaner.

The advice continues: “With the steamer on and running, gently run it over the surface of the mattress, starting from the top, working downward.”

Allow everything to dry before putting fresh bedding on “to prevent any mould or mildew” from forming on the mattress.

While the informational clip seems to be very thorough, some think it’s excessive to scrub your mattress so often.

In the comments, someone joked: “Every 46 weeks, got it”, with someone having a similar outlook: “Every four to six decades? Okay”.

Another added: “Or you just get a mattress protector and wash that every 4 to 6 weeks. Works just as well.”

A TikToker pointed out: “The mattress should have an encasement on with a waterproof mattress protector on top of that that you wash – there would be no need to do this and no stains”.

“I’d rather replace it”, someone jokily added.
