Food items you should never feed your dog – causes ‘pain’

Dogs aren’t typically recognised for their refined palates. They absolutely adore treats, whether it’s a specially chosen organic kibble or a random piece of trash they find while prodding down the street.

Since dogs have a passion for eating and for getting into things they shouldn’t, it’s crucial to monitor what your dog consumes to ensure it’s safe. Certain foods can cause dogs to become ill or even lead to fatal outcomes, and it’s all too easy to make a mistake that results in a serious incident. However, with some knowledge and vigilance, these mishaps can be avoided. Three veterinarians have spoken about the foods dogs shouldn’t eat, and why they’re so dangerous.

1. Cooked bones

Don’t let your dog into the rotisserie chicken as the cooking process “makes bones more brittle than when they are raw”, making them more likely to “splinter when a dog chews them”, says Dr Danielle Bernal, a veterinarian and Vice President of Global Innovation and Nutrition at ZIWI.

They can cause choking or, worse, create holes in your dog’s intestine. Possible consequences may involve damaged teeth, oral injuries, constipation, and, most alarmingly, a blockage or tear in the intestinal tract. This can also lead to peritonitis, which is inflammation surrounding the stomach tissue.

2. Raw dough

Keep an eye on your sourdough as the yeast in unbaked bread can cause life-threatening illnesses after it is ingested.

Dr Bernal explained: “The dough continues to rise in their stomach and can extend their entire abdomen, causing extreme pain and potential blockages in the intestinal tract.”

This can result in a twisting of the stomach referred to as gastric-dilatation volvulus. Another possible complication is that the fermentation of the uncooked dough generates ethanol, which may cause alcohol poisoning.

3. Bacon

You might not feel fantastic after devouring a plate of bacon, but it’s even more harmful for your furry friend.

This breakfast staple is packed with high amounts of sodium and fat, which can cause an upset stomach or even pancreatitis (a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed and doesn’t work properly) in dogs.

4. Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts can be harmful and contain a high level of fat that may upset dogs’ stomachs. Veterinarian Justine Lee warned that consuming around two nuts for every pound of a dog’s weight could cause poisoning, which might result in a temporary inability to walk.

5. White bread

Standard white bread contains a lot of oil and sugar, which can lead to pancreatitis in dogs. Schnauzers are especially vulnerable, according to veterinarian Dr Sonja Olson, who mentions treating one that had consumed an entire loaf of white bread. She recalled that “he was extremely ill” and remained in that state “for days”.
