UK passport holders will soon be required to pay a 20 euro fee to enter countries such as Spain, Greece and Italy due to new regulations. Following Brexit, UK citizens are now legally obliged to register with the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to gain entry into certain European nations.

The introduction of the travel permit is an initiative by EU chiefs to strengthen security and the borders of the Schengen zone, a group of European countries between which border controls have been scrapped. Initially, the ETIAS scheme was projected to cost 7 euros per person, but it has now been announced that the price will be almost tripled to 20 euros per eligible traveller.

Exemptions apply for children and individuals over the age of 70. With an ETIAS, travellers can visit European countries as often as they wish for short-term stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

The scheme’s implementation has been postponed several times already. Earlier this year, the EU’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs estimated that the ETIAS will be introduced in the final quarter of 2026. Following an initial grace period, applying for an ETIAS will become mandatory in 2027, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It is worth noting that it will also be needed for Cyprus travel when Cyprus joins the Schengen area.
