Full timeline of Catholic Church’s Popes spanning back 1,993 years after Francis’ death | World | News
The Catholic Church is an ancient institution that has been a major fixture of European and global religion and politics for many centuries. Today, it is estimated that there are around 1.39 billion Catholics in the world, and they will soon have a new leader after the death of Pope Francis yesterday at the age of 88. The Vatican has confirmed that this was due to a stroke and subsequent heart failure.
Photos have been released of Francis, who is the only pontiff to have chosen the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, who is remembered for his care for the poor. After the Holy Father’s funeral, which will take place on Saturday, cardinals will meet and vote for his successor. The conclave will need to reach a two-thirds majority verdict as to who it wants to take on the role revered across the world. The world will be gripped as it waits for white smoke to emerge from the Sistine Chapel.
The long line of Popes features all sorts of characters, from the most corrupt, the famous Borgia family, which produced two popes, Callixtus III and Alexander VI, to the most humble.
Not since the Syrian-born Gregory III has the Vatican had a pontiff from outside Europe, and Francis was the first from South America.
Some, such as John Paul II, have been canonised since their deaths.
Francis made his predecessor a saint in April 2014 for allegedly performing two miracles: the healing of a French nun, Sister Marie Pierre, from Parkinson’s disease, and the healing of Floribeth Mora Diaz from a brain injury caused by an aneurysm.
Pope Adrian IV was Pope from 4 December 1154 until 1159. He is the only Englishman to have beena pontiff.
