Fury as customer complains over ‘insane’ cup of tea price | World | News
A customer was left furious after being charged an “insane” price for a cup of tea at his local cafe. The man shared pictures of the tea on Reddit and slammed the price as “ridiculous”.
He paid $6.50 (Australian), which equates to £3.24, for a pot of tea at Pattison’s Pattiserie in Sydney. However, it only contained enough for one cup leaving the man feeling ripped off. As reported by news.com.au, he said: “Shrinkflation in this city is getting ridiculous.
“While waiting for the missus, I encountered the worst case of shrinkflation yet.”
He added: “Tea drinkers get super ripped off in Australia.” Meanwhile, others said they were sick of paying “almost the same amount as a coffee” for a “20 cent tea bag and hot water”.
On the Reddit thread, one person noted: “Australia doesn’t have much of a tea culture, so loose leaf is considered ‘fancy’, so they can charge through the roof”.
However, others pointed out that you get more than just the drink when dining out. One person said: “You’re paying for the table, not the tea.”
A second replied: “It’s for the ambience. And the rent, labour and utilities.” A third wrote: “You can drink tea two ways – at home or expensively. Ordering tea outside the home is really asking for it.”
In the UK, prices for a cup of tea vary between cafes and locations, with costs higher in major cities such as London. At Greggs, you can get a cup for £1.55 while at Costa it will set you back £3.15.
At independent cafes, the cost varies from between £2 and £3.30. Meanwhile, making a cup of tea at home costs considerably less with supermarkets selling 80 standard bags of brands, such as Tetley, Yorkshire Tea and PG Tips, for between £3 and £5.
