Gardening mistakes: Avoid these five common mistakes that ‘kill’ grass and make it dry
A gardening expert has shared the top five mistakes people make in their gardens that can cause lawns to become dry, brown and unattractive.
A healthy, vibrant green lawn is achievable, but it takes more than just the occasional mowing and watering.
Many homeowners unintentionally sabotage their lawns with common mistakes, experts say.
Gardening expert Oliver Johnson at HomeAdviceGuide.com has highlighted five common mistakes to avoid.
Here are the top five mistakes people make with their lawns:
Scalping the Lawn: Aim for Height, Not Speed
Johnson said: “Mowing your lawn too short is a recipe for disaster. While it may seem like a time-saver to keep it low, scalping stresses the grass, making it vulnerable to disease, drought, and pests.
“As a general rule, aim for a height of around three inches. This allows the grass to retain its top growth, staying strong and resilient.”
Fertiliser: Choose Wisely and Apply Correctly
The gardening expert explained: “Fertilising can be a great way to keep your lawn healthy, but it’s all about balance. Using the wrong fertiliser for your grass type can cause damage.
“But applying too much or too little can be detrimental. Excess fertiliser can harm the lawn, while insufficient amounts render it ineffective.
Applying fertiliser at the wrong time of year also affects results. Choose a fertiliser specifically formulated for your grass type and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates and timing.”
