GB finally win first Winter Olympics medal as Matt Weston grabs gold | Other | Sport
Team GB have their first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics after Matt Weston won gold in the men’s skeleton. It represents Great Britain’s first medal at the winter games since winning gold in women’s curling four years ago.
Weston’s winning time was +0.88 faster than second-placed Axel Jungk of Germany. The 28-year-old was in tears after finishing a dominant run.
Speaking to BBC Sport afterwards, he said: “It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally, I’ve worked so hard for this. But everyone back home – my fiance, my family, my friends, everyone who has sacrificed everything for this. I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment. It feels amazing.
“Even if you’re not part of my close circle, if you play the national lottery you are supporting me as well so thank you so much. Hopefully I did you proud!”
BBC commentator John Hunt roared with delight after witnessing GB’s first medal after seven days of action in Milan and Cortina. He said: “Matt Weston is in a completely different league. It is a life-changing moment.
“He has done it with a flourish. Wonderful, wonderful moment for him.
“That was sensational, dominant throughout. Quite, quite spectacular from Matt Weston and very deserved.

Two-time Olympic skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold heaped praise on Weston’s dominant performance. She said: “Every single one of the four runs were absolute perfection. Incredibly impressive from Matt Weston.
“What stands out for me is each and every time Matt Weston stood at the start block he was looking down the track, he excelled, he accelerated, he was so focused. I really can’t find the words to describe how incredibly impressed I am with his performance.”
