Gerrard’s comments on Liverpool target to replace Slot speaks volumes | Football | Sport

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has already heaped praise on Paris-Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique amid rumours of a potential move to Anfield. Arne Slot currently holds the reins at Liverpool, but his future has been the subject of intense speculation.

Consecutive losses to Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven following the international break have piled pressure on Slot’s position in the Anfield hot seat. The Reds have suffered defeats in six of their last seven Premier League outings, nine out of 12 across all competitions, and have been beaten by a three-goal margin in each of their last three matches.

Slot’s future hangs in the balance, but it appears that the Liverpool hierarchy are standing by the Premier League title-winning manager for now. Nonetheless, this hasn’t stopped rumours about potential replacements being considered.

The Sun has reported that Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique is in the running to be the next Liverpool manager if a change occurs. Last season, Enrique led PSG to Champions League glory, with the French giants securing a 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the final.

PSG also knocked Liverpool out in the last-16 round last season en route to lifting the trophy. Gerrard, who was working as a pundit the Champions League final last season, explained why Enrique should be considered one of the world’s top managers, reports The Mirror.

“Does Luis Enrique deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola? The answer is yes,” Gerrard said during TNT Sports’ Champions League final coverage back in May.

“This team he has created and put together over the past year or two can beat you in any given way. The talent across this squad – it is a special group of players and they’re getting coached by a special person as well.”

Liverpool’s decision regarding Slot’s future remains uncertain, with a Premier League fixture against West Ham looming on Sunday. Following the Reds’ Champions League defeat to PSV, Slot was quizzed about his future, where he admitted that the speculation doesn’t surprise him given the club’s recent performances.

“It is a shock for everyone, for the players, for me, this is very, very unexpected,” Slot said earlier this week. “I am feeling safe, I am okay though.

“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory but if you are working as a coach and not doing well then it is normal that questions are asked.

“If any manager around the world loses football games, let alone as many as we have lost, it’s quite normal people have an opinion about that. If it’s fair or unfair, it’s for other people to judge. Is that normal? I think it is. If you lose so many times, people start talking about that.

“I have got a lot of support from above. I am okay with my position. They [the board] don’t call every single minute of the day to say they trust me but in the normal conversations we have, I feel the trust.”
